Her mother raised her in the USA and she was subject to many racial taunts that left her feeling like an unwanted person. Her confidence began to grow during the 9th grade, after she took part in a school audition. She was praised by the judges for her vocal ability. Not only did it boost her confidence, but also her goals were changed. She was a graduate of New York's Julliard School at the age of 22. In 1993, she had her Broadway debut with Paul Simon's The Capeman. Her first film was titled You've got Mail. The greatest accomplishment of her career occurred in the role of The Lady Of The Lake in Spamalot's first Broadway production. In addition to being the only actress to receive the Tony Award, but her performance was also praised by the critics. The following year, in 2007 she was cast in the ABC series Grey's Anatomy and became more well-known. Known as a singer she also released a single and an extended play. In addition, she has been a vocal advocate for LGBT issues.
